  Donating a Horse
The MCC Equine Technology program relies solely on charitable donations from people like you to obtain lesson horses for our program. All donations to the college are fully tax deductible.   If you have a horse that you would be interested in donating, please read through the information below.  The college is also in need of and accepts other non-cash charitable contributions.  Please see this page for more information. Is your horse a good fit for our program?

There are a number of  factors that go into determining whether a horse will be a good fit for our program..  The most important criteria are:

  • The horse is broke to ride and can be ridden every day
  • The horse has minor  medical or soundness issues or none at all
  • The horse is safe to ride and handle from the ground (no severe behavioral issues like rearing/striking and/or severe bucking)
We do need and accept colts and young or green horses, but prefer to receive those donations in December and January to coincide with our Colt Breaking and Training class.

I think that my horse will be a good fit for the program, what's next?

Step 1: Download and complete the following forms:
Please note: If your horse is valued at $5,000 or above, you will need to include an appraisal by an equine professional.  Horses valued at $5,000 or above will be kept by the college a minimum of three years before they can be sold at our annual auction.  If your horse is valued at $4,999 or below, we do not require an appraisal.  Horses valued at $4,999 or below can be sold at our annual auction the April after they are donated.

Step 2: Gather any additional information you have on the horse.  Photos, show records, medical records, and especially videos are helpful in the decision-making process.
Note: You may also send  photos, video or other records via e-mail  to tthurston@martincc.edu.

Step 3: Send all of the above information along with a copy of the horse's current negative Coggins to:

How long before I know the status of my donation?
Once received, the Equine Department will review the information and call you with any questions we may have.  After the paperwork is in order, it can take from two weeks up to two months to process.  You will then be notified whether the donation has been accepted or denied.

What happens after my horse is accepted?
If your horse is accepted, you must then make arrangements with the Equine Facility Manager to deliver the horse.  The horse must arrive on campus with a current negative Coggins and be up to date on all vaccinations.  If the horse is registered, bring the original papers and any necessary transfer of ownership papers (signed) at this time.  Please let us know if you would like to be contacted if the horse goes up for sale and we will record the information in the horse's file.  If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us.
