Welcome, everyone. My name is DeAna Cahoon. I am
Equine Club President and a sophomore studying Equine Technology at
Martin Community College (MCC). I
am also Secretary for the Student Government Association. I am so thrilled to invite
you to our wonderful college and program, and I hope to meet each and
every one of you that intend to enroll.
That is, if you arrive before May,
because I plan to graduate and move to
Kentucky
to finish my B.S. in Equine Science at Midway College.
There are many opportunities
waiting for you here at MCC, including our new IHSA (Intercollegiate
Horse Show Association) Riding Team.
IHSA members travel to other colleges in
our region and compete in the Western, Hunt Seat and Reining
disciplines. We
also have the opportunity to compete at local open shows and be
involved in other equine-related events through a major show facility
less than one mile from campus. Additionally,
a group of sophomores travels to either the Rolex or the Quarter Horse
Congress to gain exposure to major events within the equine industry. As an active Equine Club
delegate, you will have the option of being involved in one or all of
these activities.
The Equine Club puts on several
fundraising events during the year to make equine-related activities,
including the IHSA Riding Team, possible.
The major fundraisers are our spring and
fall open horse shows, held at Martin Arena, but we also do bake sales,
car washes and run the concession stand during other events in the
arena.
I strongly urge you to be involved in
the Equine Club. As
a delegate, you will learn both responsibility and leadership and
greatly enhance your education here at MCC.
You can be involved on a higher level by
running for the executive board or becoming a senator for the Equine
Department in the Student Government (SGA).
For those who take an exceptional
interest in leadership, the SGA offers many learning opportunities to
members of its executive board.
To prospective students: if
you are considering the horse industry as a career path, choose wisely.
The road to becoming an equine professional takes a tremendous amount
of dedication and effort. Horses
do not have the choice of not being in a stall so they count on you to
keep them from getting sick and making sure they have the proper
health care they need. The
Equine program here is very time intensive.
Many of our students take care of six or
more horses, go to school full time, are members of either the SGA,
Equine Club, IHSA Riding Team or several of these and often have a full
or part-time job as well. We
work very hard but we have a lot of fun as well, so if you think the
horse industry is for you, this is the place to be.
Hopefully
I will see many more of you in the next few months.
Best Wishes,
DeAna B. Cahoon
2006-2007
MCC Equine Club President
